The Music Production & Technology department maintains professional studios with modern recording systems to facilitate effective teaching and learning. The studios are equipped with a combination of carefully chosen analogue and digital equipment, and students start out on a traditional analogue approach and moves on to a combination of high end analogue and digital equipment in higher level modules.

Recording Studio

The main music production facility at ICOM is the recording studio. This facility houses a 44 channel AMEK console with super-true automation. An OTARI MX-80 24 track analogue recorder is used for tape based recording while a ProTools DAW along with a Logic Audio Platinum workstation facilitates hard disc based digital production.

A lexicon 480L multi-effects processor, together with an Eventide H3000 harmonizer and Yamaha SPX series processors provide a wide range of signal processing options while outboard equipment from Drawmer and Summit Audio offer a choice of dynamics processing. Equalizers from Focusrite, Klark Teknik and Neve are available for the students to craft the tonal character of their recordings.

The main monitoring is by a pair of Dynaudio acoustics M3 speakers, and the near field monitoring is thru Yamaha NS-10Ms. The studio also features a collection of synthesizers, sound modules and samplers from Korg, Roland, AKAI and Alesis. Apart from this, the recording room houses a Marshall Guitar amplifier, Trace Elliot bass amplifier and a Yamaha custom drum kit.

There is an excellent collection of microphones from Sennheiser, Neumann, Shure, and AKG. This provides the students with a wide range of professional microphones to choose from.

Digital Lab

The digital lab houses a Yamaha O1V96 V2 digital mixing console and a ProTools 6.4 DAW. Monitoring is thru Alesis M1 active speakers. A G4 i-Mac is used to run the ProTools software and the Yamaha studio manager application. Students learn digital production skills in this lab including dynamic automation and advanced audio editing.

Other Facilities

Synthesiser Lab

Six workstations, each equipped with Logic audio Platinum, Yamaha and Roland sound modules, Alesis keyboard controller, and an analogue mixer are available for the students for MIDI/Audio production. In addition to this, ProTools m-box systems are available for
completing projects and assignments using this lab. This lab is also utilized for teaching MIDI systems and synthesis techniques.

Recital Hall

The recital hall is equipped with a Soundcraft spirit live sound reinforcement console and an active PA system. Outboard equipment from drawmer, Yamaha, Klark Teknik, and Alesis are available. The stage is equipped with a backline consisting of guitar and bass amplifiers, active monitors, keyboards, Yamaha drum kit and a Yamaha Piano. Students get hands on training in live sound reinforcement and stage management in this facility.

In addition to this, ICOM has invested in a state-of-the-art live sound reinforcement system for concerts and events outside ICOM. The FOH consists of a digital mixing system from Yamaha and processing from Yamaha, KME and Behringer. All PA and monitoring is from Yamaha, powered by the latest Yamaha amplifiers. All microphones are Sennheiser evolution series and the backline consists of amplifiers and instruments from Yamaha, Marshall and Roland. Students will be offered training in sound reinforcement using these systems and qualifying students will get an opportunity to be a part of the crew.
